We sent our 2008 annual report   PDF Document (Reader Required; Click to Download)  to enrollees.

The report includes information on the Registry's key activities and accomplishments for 2008, as well as details on recent findings about the health consequences of 9/11. It also includes 9/11 resource and service information for those affected by the disaster.

We completed our first follow-up health survey of adult enrollees, with 68% responding. We also surveyed parents and guardians of enrollees under age 18, with 50% responding by the December 2008 deadline. Preliminary findings will be available this year.

In March, we submitted an application for federal funding to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health for our second follow-up survey. We are in the process of designing the new survey.

The Registry is currently studying the respiratory health of enrollees who lived or worked near the WTC disaster. The findings will help determine the impact of 9/11 on respiratory health.

We are conducting a study to learn how the mortality rate and causes of death among enrollees compare to these rates in the New York metropolitan area and nationwide. The findings will help determine whether those exposed to the disaster are at an increased risk for premature death.

Cancer
The Registry is currently conducting a study to learn how the rate of cancer among enrollees compares to the rate nationwide. To help us identify enrollees diagnosed with cancer, we have matched enrollee information against state cancer registries. The findings will help us understand whether those exposed to 9/11 are at an increased risk for cancer.

Sarcoidosis
We sent a questionnaire to enrollees who reported they were diagnosed with sarcoidosis on the first follow-up health survey, with 60% responding. The findings will help us learn more about sarcoidosis PDF Document (Reader Required; Click to Download) and plan for 9/11-related health care needs.

9/11-Related Exposure Study
The Registry is gathering information to help us develop a follow-up health survey of Staten Island landfill and barge recovery workers. The survey will help us better understand 9/11-related exposures.

To help those affected by 9/11 become and stay tobacco-free, the Registry is offering smoking cessation services to enrollees who currently smoke. For more information, call (888) WTC-QUIT (1-888-982-7848) or email WTCHRCARES@health.nyc.gov.

The Registry will be contacting enrollees who reported unmet health care needs on the follow-up health survey, to provide referrals to free or low-cost WTC treatment programs.
