For a quarter of a century, Segundo Ruiz Belvis Neighborhood Family Health Center has provided a wide range of health services to entire families, from infants to the elderly. Belvis' patient-centered approach features Integrated Care Teams for families and includes internists, pediatricians, social workers and nursing personnel.
Named for the much revered Puerto Rican humanitarian, this community-based primary care facility prides itself in the partnerships it has created to benefit the residents of the South Bronx.
Each of Belvis' obstetrics and gynecological patients is assigned specific providers—nurse midwives, OB/GYN nurse practitioners and specialist physicians to administer prenatal, obstetrical, gynecological and colposcopy services. Other Women's Health Service offerings include the federal Women, Infants and Children (WIC) food and nutrition services program to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants and children. WIC clients often are referred to other Belvis services, including the medical services, prenatal care or pediatric services.
Joining forces with local schools has enabled Belvis to introduce wellness programs to young New Yorkers and indirectly to their families.
True to its identity as a community health center, through its Community Health Education and Outreach, Belvis disseminates important health information to community-based organizations, businesses and educational institutions. Belvis also provides in-service training to patients and staff on such health issues as diabetes and nutrition, smoking, asthma, high blood pressure, preparation for childbirth, parenting skills, weight control and HIV/AIDS education.
