The 2008 Youngstown State University “Marching Pride” is gearing up for another exciting season supporting the Penguins. The 2007 Marching Pride was comprised of two Drum Majors, 22 Auxiliary including color guard, dancers and a featured twirler, 12 percussionists and 81 wind players and consisted of undergraduate and graduate students who represented over 30 academic majors at YSU. This year, the band will be helping the team “Fight the Bad Guys at Stambaugh Stadium” by featuring music from crime fighters and super heroes of the past and today. Their first show will feature the music the costumed crime fighters including The Incredibles, Wonder Woman, and Themes from Batman. The second show will highlight music of crime fighters and include Hawaii Five-O, Secret Agent Man, and James Bond 007. During pre-game, the band will feature both the “Penguinette” Dance Team and the Color Guard in selections including Shake a Tail Feather, Soak Up the Sun, School is Out and Welcome to the Jungle.
Before many home games, the band performers a pre-game “Icebreaker” concert in Beeghly gymnasium. In addition to the music of the “Marching Pride,” the guest band of the day will perform school spirit songs and highlights from upcoming shows.
As of July 2008, The “Icebreaker” schedule for the fall will be as follows:
• Saturday, Sept. 13 at 2:30 p.m. featuring the Central State University Marching Band in the Beeghly Center Gym
• Saturday, Sept. 20 at 4:30 p.m. featuring the South Range Raider Marching Band
• Saturday, Sept. 27 at 4:30 p.m. featuring the Hubbard High School Marching Band in the Beeghly Center Gym
• Saturday, Oct. 18 at 2:30 p.m. featuring the Liberty High School Marching Band in the Beeghly Center Gym.
Each year, the Marching Pride performs at home games to help cheer on the YSU Penguin Football team. In addition, the band has hosted and performed for the Bands of America Regional events held at Stambaugh Stadium (2002-2007), as well as recent away games at the University of Pittsburgh (2005), Penn State University (2006) and The Ohio State University (2007). The marching band is scheduled to join the Penguins in Ohio Stadium on August 30 when the team takes on the Buckeyes.
YSU Marching Pride
The band has performed on broadcasts of ESPN and CBS as it traveled to football championships with the 1991, 1993, 1994, and 1997 NCAA FCS National Championship Penguin football teams; and, in 1999, when the football Penguins were the FCS National Runner-up team.The band has also performed for the Cleveland Browns (2006), and Buffalo Bills of the National Football League.
The 2007 “Marching Pride” had 66 members who were a part of the Dana School of Music, 11 from the College of Education, nine from the College of Arts and Sciences, 13 from the College of Health and Human Services, 21 STEM- Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics, six from the College of Business, and five from the College of Fine and Performing Arts. One hundred and seven members hailed from the state of Ohio, while 17 came from Pennsylvania, two from New York and one member each from West Virginia and Wisconsin.
